Unusual Vintage RAF Logo Picture made from Multi-Coloured Foil
Here on offer is a very unusual vintage RAF logo picture made from multi-coloured foil, circa 1950.
In all my years of collecting I have not seen a picture like this!
It depicts the RAF logo with Queen’s crown and RAF wings along with the RAF motto:
PER ARDUA AD ASTRA
I am not exactly sure how it has been made, but looks like the glass was originally painted all black on the reverse, then the paint removed (very carefully) from the areas that want to show the image from the front. Then the appropriate coloured foil has been crinkled and applied to each area.
This has produced a stunning image from the front with an almost 3D effect from the crinkled foil.
The RAF logo itself is still in perfect original condition and the glass has a card backing with hanging loop that has been sealed around the edges with tape.
There are a couple of small sections of tape loss and bizarrely to small areas below the logo that look like tape has been applied to the paint and then removed?
These don’t affect the logo in any way but as the glass is now sealed they must have been done before it was sealed?
I can only find one other example of this type on the Internet, which depicts and earlier RAF logo and is not as colourful and is being offered at £180, over twice my asking price!
I think this is a unique and beautiful display piece as such and makes a great addition to any RAF collection.
It measures 10.6” (27cm) by 8.5” (21.5cm) and weighs 480g.
