Reverse Glass Painted Picture of H.M.S. GOLIATH Memorialising her sinking in the Dardanelles 12th May 1915 during WW1

Here on offer is a rare example of a commemorative reverse glass painted picture of the Royal Navy battleship H.M.S. GOLIATH, before she was sunk by torpedoes in the Dardenelles on 12th May 1915, during WW1.

A glass picture has been reverse printed and then hand coloured along with mother of pearl detailing.

The picture shows the ship at full speed in a calm sea with the words at the lower edge:

TORPEDOED IN THE DARDANELLES MAY 12/15

The glass is undamaged and is attached to its original gold velvet scalloped edge frame that has a red card backing. It even still has its original twisted thread-hanging loop at the top.

The picture portrays a great image of the ship at speed with smoke billowing out of one of its funnels.
There is some areas of paint loss, on the ship, in the sea and along the top edge, as shown in my photos.

HMS Goliath was one of the six Canopus-class pre-dreadnought battleships built by the Royal Navy in the late 19th century. Commissioned in 1900, she served in the Far East on the China Station until 1905, at which time she joined the Mediterranean Fleet. In 1906, she was attached to the Channel Fleet. Having been mothballed prior to the outbreak of the First World War, she was returned to full commission.

Goliath took part in operations against German East Africa, participating in the blockade of the German light cruiser SMS Königsberg in the Rufiji River. From March 1915, she was part of the Dardanelles Campaign, and remained in support of the landings at Gallipoli in April. On 12/13 May 1915 Goliath was sunk in Morto Bay off Cape Helles by two torpedoes from the Turkish torpedo boat destroyer Muâvenet-i Millîye, which was manned by a combined German and Turkish crew, taking 570 of the 700-strong crew to the bottom including her commanding officer, Captain Thomas Lawrie Shelford.

The frame measures 10” (25.4cm) by 8.75” (22.3cm) and weighs 310g.

A scarce piece of British Naval memorabilia!
