Large Bronze Medal Commemorating Napoleon's Death on St Helena 1821

Here on offer is a large bronze medal that was issued by France to commemorate Napoleon's Death on St Helena, 5th May 1821.

This finely detailed medal was minted in Paris in 1821.

On the obverse it depicts:

The laureate head of Napoleon facing right, set within a closed wreath, that has ribbons with the names of his famous victory battles, such as Rivoli, Austerlitz, etc.

On the reverse it depicts:

A view of the island of St. Helena with a ship sailing to right, the sun setting in the background and an eagle flying above.
Around the inner edge are the words:

IL MOURUT SUR UN ROCHER.

ILE STE. HELENE.
5 MAI 1821.

The edge is plain apart from it has the Paris maker’s mark and the word BRONZE stamped into it.

The medal measures 2.7” (6.8cm) diameter and weighs a heavy 142g.

It is in excellent condition with a slight ding to the front edge and some staining and scratches to the reverse.
