Vintage Mountain Knife by S. & S. HELLE of Holmedal, Norway with its Original Leather Sheath

Here on offer is a vintage Norwegian knife by S. & S. HELLE, the world famous knife manufacturers from Holmedal in Norway.

I believe this type was known as a Mountain Knife, which where made in several sizes. This is 7.75” knife is one of the smaller versions known as a “Woman’s knife”.

The grip is made from compressed sections of dark leather rings with a smooth stag antler pommel fitted on the top with a brass strap-retaining nipple.

The ferrule is also made from smooth stag antler and connects directly to the 3.75” steel blade.

The single edged steel blade has the maker’s details stamped on one side, which read as:

S. & S. HELLE
HOLMEDAL
NORGE

The blade shows signs of sharpening to the blade cutting edge and now has an aged greying to the metal finish.

The brown leather stitched sheath is in excellent condition and the shaped main body is embossed with the words:

Fjellkniven (translates to The Mountain Knife)

Norway

and the image of a deer’s head and a mountain view.

At the top it still retains the belt loop and keeper strap that fits over the brass nipple on the top of the pommel.

The knife measures 7.75” (19.7cm) long and has a 3.75” (9.5cm) blade.

It weighs 100g.

HELLE still make fine knifes today, but these earlier collector’s vintage examples are becoming hard to find and are increasing in value.
