Unique Hand Carved Wooden Version of a RAD EM Hewer dated 4.4.38

Here on offer is a hand carved wooden (near full size) version of a RAD EM Hewer, named and dated 4.4.38.

I have actually seen a photo of trainee RAD member wearing this type of hand made wood carved Hewer in their training camp. My understanding is that they were not issued with the official version until they had completed and passed their training course.

Therefore I suspect that this was carved by the original owner while serving his RAD Service training.

I have only ever seen one other wood version over my collecting years and that was a “fixed” blade version, just carved from one piece of wood.

This unique example has a removable Hewer and although quite crudely made, it shows some great detailing.

The Hewer has been fashioned from one piece of wood and the grip has a simulated stag horn painted grip with two metal pins fitted on the front, simulating the rivets.

The fittings and blade have been painted silver and mimic the real version.

On the front of the blade, in hand writing it has the RAD motto, Arbeit adelt” that translates to “Labor Ennobles”.

On the reverse there is some hand writing that is hard to make out but there appears to be a soldiers name:

Werne ??? Lippe

Lippe may refer to his surname or the small German state, possibly where the training camp was located?

I can also make out a date:

4.4.38

Also possibly part of a service number?:

Abt 1764A8

The scabbard has been made from two carved slabs of wood that are pinned together.

It has been painted black and the mimicked scabbard fittings have been painted with sliver paint.

Drawn on the top “mount” are the RAD curls along with a circular pattern border at the lower edge.

The lower “mount” has an original RAD tinnie badge pinned to the front and the circular pattern border drawn on the upper edges.

There are also two holes on the edge of the scabbard where I believe it would have originally had a metal hanging loop attached, so it could actually be worn!

The Hewer measures 12” (30.5cm) with a blade length of 7.5” (19cm).

The Hewer in the scabbard measures 15” (38cm) long.

It weighs 120g.

This is just a wonderful facsimile of a nearly full size RAD Hewer and makes a great conversation piece and addition to any edged weapon collection!
