Rare Remington Saw Handle Derringer 0.32 (obsolete) Calibre Pocket Pistol with a “Book” Pistol Case circa 1880

Here on offer is a very rare Remington Saw Handle Derringer 0.32 calibre pocket or vest pistol.

Invented by William H. Elliot, this pocket-sized Remington featured a hammer that also served as a breechblock.

It was known as the "Saw Handle Derringer," given the shape of the grip.

These small personal defence arms were available with blued, silver, or nickeled finish.

This one has a blued finish that has worn over the years and shows some dark shading to the metal. Please see my photos.

I understand that about 15,000 of the 0.41 calibre single shot pistols were produced between 1865 and 1888 but this one is a 0.32 (obsolete calibre) rim fire, of which I believe less than 500 were made!

The single shot pistol is in full working order and to load it, the hammer is pulled to full cock and the little breach pulled back.

I have carefully removed the wooden grips and you can see in my photos that the frame has been stamped with the pistols serial No. 1120.

It comes with TWO rounds of 0.32 inert cartridges (cases have been drilled) that are in an antique Remington 50 cartridge 0.32 short rim fire ammunition box. This card box is a rare find, especially in this condition.

The set also comes with a period after market “Book” type case that is customised to take the pistol and box of cartridges. Inside it has an aluminium swivel lever that holds the pistol firmly in place inside the case.

The case really looks like a brown leather covered book. It even has gilt embossing and a coloured pattern to the page edges. Inside it is lined with a blue velvet material. There is some age wear to the exterior edges and hinge, as can be seen in my photos.

The pistol measures 5” (12.7cm) long and it has a 4” (10.3cm) barrel.

It weighs 200g.

The “Book” case measures 4” (10.2cm) by 7.75” (19.7cm).

It weighs 125g.

Please see my pictures for the details of the condition, which complement this description.
