Unusual WW2 Romanian Army Dagger
Here on offer is an unusual and rare version of a WW2 Romanian Army dagger with scabbard.
This seems to be more of a “commando” style dagger than the usual ornate dress daggers?
There is no maker mark on this dagger as is common with these Romanian daggers.
The hilt fittings are all Nickel-plated and show no signs of rust or pitting.
The ornate pommel is in the shape of an eagle’s head and it still retains its original red glass eyes and portepee loop/ring. There is light surface wear to the reverse of the eagle head pommel where it would have rubbed against the uniform.
Now what is unusual about this dagger are the dark brown and very slightly chequered grip plates, which are held in place with three smooth metal rivets. No sign of an emblem ever having been fitted as seen on many of these dress daggers.
These fit the dagger perfectly and connect to a plain elongated oval almost “commando” style crossguard, not the usual oak leaf embellished downturned crossguard.
The Nickel-plated, double-edged stiletto shaped blade shows light surface wear/runner marks to the ricasso. The tip shows signs of having been bent and reshaped but there is no loss of plating or pitting to the finish.
The dent-free nickel-plated scabbard with bayonet-style suspension lug shows light surface wear and minor pitting, but no lifting to plating.
The blade measures 6.7” (17cm) and the dagger in the scabbard measures a total of 11.4” (29cm) long.
It weighs 225g.
