Antique Puukko Knife by JEAN METTE with an Engraved Scrimshaw Bone Handle - circa 1880
Here on offer is a beautiful antique Puukko knife by JEAN METTE of Oslo, Norway with a hand engraved scrimshaw bone handle and hard leather sheath, circa 1880.
From what I can find out, JEAN METTE was a Norwegian surgical instrument maker back in the late 19th century. Also known for making Puukko knives, Barrel knives and razors.
This great example comes with a single edge blade that is stamped on one side with the name:
JEAN METTE
The blades still retain a sharp edge with no nicks and just light signs of sharpening.
The main feature of this unique knife is the bone handle that has been beautifully engraved both sides with scrimshaw work being an ornate scrolled pattern.
Interestingly this knife does not have the usual metal pommel top and shows no sign of one ever being fitted.
It just has a plan flat top to the bone with a tiny wooden plug to the centre.
I can’t tell what animal bone it is actually made from, possible reindeer, moose or even walrus?
The hard shell of the sheath is covered in brown leather with shaped nickel silver fittings.
At the top it retains the original leather suspension strap, which is attached to the top sheath fitting by a hinged metal loop.
This rare and possibly unique knife is in excellent original condition.
The blade measures 4” (10.2cm) and the knife itself is 7.75” (19.7cm) long.
It weighs 125g.
