Here on offer is a cased example of a French Ministry of War - Bronze Medallion for Military Physical Training Preparation - Prize of The Minister circa 1911.

This very large solid bronze medallion has on the obverse the image of La Patrie seated on a cannon showing a young soldier the feats of arms of the French Army.

Around the edge are the words:

SI.VIS.PACEM.PARA – BELLVM (If you want peace, prepare for war) and in the epigraph: PRO.PATRIA. R/ Also the engravers name: Paul Grandhomme (1851-1914).

On the reverse is the image of a seated lion with various military equipment in the background.

Around the edge are the words:
ENTRAINEMENT PHYSIQUE . PREPARATION MILITAIRE and FORCE COURAGE.

On a central plaque are the words:

PRIX du MINISTRE
de la
GUERRE
(PRIZE OF THE MINISTER OF WAR)

Around the edge it has a tiny French maker’s stamp, and the word: BRONZE.
The medallion comes with its original red leather covered case that is slightly scuffed. It has the words:

MINISTERE
de la
GUERRE
(Ministry of War)

in gold lettering on the top of the lid.


It measures 1.9” (5cm) diameter and weighs a heavy 65g.


It is in excellent condition, with just a few tiny edge dings. All the fine detailing remains and it now has a beautiful aged patina to the bronze finish.
