Vintage German made North Brazilian “Faca de Ponta” Knife with Leather Sheath c1930
Here on offer is a fine example of vintage German made North Brazilian “Faca de Ponta” knife with its original leather sheath.
My belief is these very fine knives where made in Solingen Germany by a number of makers, for export to Brazil and where made between 1927 and 1940.
They where made to be carried by the “wealthy” Brazilian’s as a form of protection and where also the preferred weapon of for some of the Brazilian gangs.
The grip is made up of ornate gilt metal sections along with perfect honey coloured Catalin (early rival of Bakelite) sections. The pommel top is made from gilt metal, probably brass, with a circular ribbed pattern.
The crossguard is made from polished aluminium with up and down turned quillion ends.
The fine long single edge blade looks to be chrome or nickel-plated and has a clip point tip.
On one side it has an etched floral pattern on half of the blade and the words:
HIGH LIFE
And near the ricasso, a five pronged crown, maker mark, which I can’t identify.
The blade is in excellent condition with just some minor light pitting towards the tip of the blade.
The red felt buffer pad is missing with just a few strands left underneath the crossguard.
The light brown leather sheath is in excellent condition, retaining all its original stitching and the boot/belt flap.
The blade measures 7.25” (18.5cm) and the knife itself is 11.6” (29.5cm) long.
It weighs 86g.
