Rare WW1 Royal Navy Hallmarked Silver Torpedo Sweetheart Brooch with Case - 1917

Here on offer is a rare original WW1 period Royal Navy hallmarked silver Torpedo sweetheart brooch.

The brooch has been made in the form of a hollow silver WW1 period torpedo and shows fine detail including even the external outer case rivets!

All the rudder flaps are in place as are the fuse contact pins on the front.

This example has two original small rounded flaps, one on the top and the other of set on the bottom. I think these where possibly to allow a silver title scroll to be attached, with a good luck phrase or possibly a ships name/emblem?

Good condition, complete with original pin fitting and old replacement hook, no dents or distortions to front, minor one to reverse.

On the flat reverse there are impressed a clear set of English silver hallmarks, the Lion Passant for English silver (925), an Anchor for the assay office of Birmingham and the date letter “S” for the year 1917.

There is also a maker’s mark, F.H.M., which stands for the renowned silversmith, Frank H. Mannox of Warstone Lane, Birmingham.

The brooch also still retains its original long fixing pin and “C” clasp.

It comes complete with a gilt-edged leatherette case, which is in excellent condition and displays the jewellers name and details inside the top of the silk lined lid.

The brooch itself measures 2.25” (5.7cm) long and it weighs 2.7g of silver.
