Unique Victorian Carved Horn and Silver Horse Leg Shaped Snuff Holder
Here on offer is a unique and rare Victorian horn and silver snuff holder that has been hand carved into a horse’s leg and hoof.
I have seen a few antique walking canes with horn horse leg handles, but never a snuff holder.
All the metal fittings are test as 925-grade silver but there are no hallmarks or makers details.
The horse leg has been beautifully carved from a light (blond) coloured horn, which has a smooth finish with no damage.
The horse hoof has been fitted with a detailed silver horseshoe and base.
The top has a silver collar and the cap has been made from plug of horn that is topped with an 1878 Queen Victoria silver shilling with initials “I Y” (possibly the owner’s initials) and a Queen Victoria silver three pence.
A thick silver chain has been fitted to the cap and horn leg to ensure the cap does not get misplaced when removed.
The cap does fit if you fiddle with it, but not tightly anymore, I guess it has just worn against the horn over the years.
It measures 3” (7.5cm) long and the cap (shilling) is 0.9” (2.3cm) diameter.
It weighs 40g.
