George VI Efficiency Medal – 1st Type with ‘Territorial’ Bar attributed to 2084109 Corporal H.R.M. LACEY R.E.M.E.

Here on offer is a silver George VI Efficiency Medal, 1st Type (1937 to 1948) with a ‘Territorial’ Bar.

It is attributed to 2084109 Corporal H.R.M. LACEY of the Royal Electrical And Mechanical Engineers
(R.E.M.E).

The Medal was instituted on 17 October 1930 to simplify the existing awards, replacing the Territorial Efficiency Medal, the Militia Long Service and Good Conduct Medal and the equivalent awards issued by Commonwealth countries to other ranks in the volunteer forces.

It was awarded for 12 years’ continuous efficient service (wartime service and also peacetime service in West Africa counting double). The first version bore the head of King George V and this was replaced by that of King George VI in 1937. In 1948, following the granting of independence to India, the circumscription on the face was changed and a second George VI type issued.

The oval silver medal is fitted to an ornate fixed suspension of two laurel leaves with a ‘TERRITORIAL’ bar.

The centre depicts the crowned head and shoulders of King George VI facing left, circumscribed ‘GEORGIVS•VI•D•G•BR•OMN•REX•ET•INDIÆ•IMP•’ (George VI by the Grace of God King of Great Britain and Emperor of India).

Just under the head it is signed ‘PM’, for the sculptor Percy Metcalfe, CVO, RDI, 1895-1970.

The reverse is inscribed:

‘FOR EFFICIENT SERVICE’.

On the edge it is stamped:

2084109 CPL H. R. M. LACEY R.E.M.E.

It comes with the correct green and yellow edged ribbon, which may be a replacement?

The medal is a fine genuine example in excellent condition apart from on the reverse where some ‘idiot’ has cut a small V section out of the rim edge and applied a solution to check it is silver! This is a genuine silver medal so God knows why they had to go to these lengths.

The oval medal measures 1.25” (3.1cm) wide, 1.5” (3.8cm) high and weighs 34g.
