Unusual Antique English made Bone Construction Fruit Knife “A Present from Folkestone” c1880
Here on offer is a really unusual antique ALL bone construction fruit knife, circa 1880.
The whole of this knife, apart from the three steel pins, is made from solid bone or a similar fine-grained natural material.
On one side of the handle it has been hand engraved with the words:
A Present from Folkestone
Clearly this was a Victorian souvenir item purchased when someone visited the very popular seaside town of Folkestone back in the late 1800’s.
I own another double bladed example, which has the maker’s name of J. RODGERS & SONS of Sheffield on it, but I have never seen a single bladed version before.
This single bladed pocketknife has been beautifully hand made, I am assuming in Sheffield, in exactly the same style as the more usual silver-bladed mother of pearl handled versions.
The blade opens and locks in place securely and snaps shut but has a slight wobble when closed.
There is some slight staining to the blade from the acid in the fruit and it has some tiny nibbles to the top cutting edge.
This is very unusual and rare knife and would make a great addition to any knife collection.
The blade measures 2.3” (6cm) long and the knife is 5.2” (13.2cm) when open.
It weighs 7.2g.
