Antique Rhythm Bones Carved from Whalebone circa early 1800’s

Here on offer are a rare pair of antique Rhythm Bones that have been carved from whalebone back in the early 1800’s when the whaling industry was operating at its commercial peak.

The bones measure just over 6" in length and some researching they appear to be shorter than what are known as minstrel style bones, which usually measure around 6.5” to 7.5” long.

I understand that shorter musical bones were prevalent among Irish and seafaring players and these where most probably made by seamen working in the whaling trade.

The bones look and feel like ivory, but close inspection reveals a grain confirming they are genuine whalebone. They actually came with a small collection of antique whaling memorabilia in a seaman's box that I will be listing over time,

The bones have a slight curve, which is correct for these types of musical sticks.

They have a wonderful smooth aged patina finish and show no signs of damage.

This is a great opportunity to obtain a rare set of these rhythm bones that still produce a loud click and are now over 200 years old!

They each measures approximately 6.2” (15.7cm) long and 1” (2.5cm) wide.

Together they weigh 85g.
