Antique English Silver Spoon made to Commemorate the Mayflower Ship in its Original Case, by Martin Hall & Co. 1893
Here on offer is a rare and unusual example of an antique solid silver spoon that has been made to commemorate the Mayflower ship that took the Pilgrims from Plymouth to America back in 1620.
The bowl of the spoon depicts the Mayflower ship in relief with the name of the ship below it.
The top of the spoon is formed in the shape of the early Victorian crest for the city of Plymouth.
On the front of the stem it is stamped with the word PLYMOUTH.
On the reverse of the stem are a clear set of English silver hallmarks, the Lion Passant for English silver (925), a Crown for the assay office of Sheffield and the date letter “a” for the year 1893.
There is a maker’s mark, but it is rubbed but you can just make out the mark for the top quality silversmiths, Martin, Hall & Co, of Sheffield, England.
It is also stamped with an Rd No. 204342, which refers the years 1892/3.
The spoon comes with its original brown snake skin effect, silk lined case that is in excellent condition case. There is just some slight oxidisation to the gilt finish on the catch of the case.
The spoon measures 5.5” (14cm) long and the bowl is 1.4” (3.7cm) wide.
The spoon weighs 23.5g of sterling silver.
