Rare WW2 German Prisoner of War “Ship in a Bottle” with Photo of the Maker, "Hans"

Here on offer is a rare example of a WW2 German (POW) Prisoner of War “Ship in a Bottle”.

This example shows a detailed coastal scene with a twin funnelled ship in the foreground and red roofed houses and a church set in a mountain scene in the background.

This skilfully set scene has been set inside an English glass bottle that was made by J L & Co.

The bottle comes with a copy of a period photo and a printed note that explains it was made by a German POW called Hans.

The note reads:

This ‘Ship in a Bottle’ was made by a young German Prisoner of War named Hans who was held in a camp near Loughborough. He worked on a local farm. The family pictured with him used to dress him in women’s clothes to take him to the local pub, as it was frowned upon to befriend the POWs!

This is a rare opportunity to acquire a real piece of WW2 POW art that is of museum quality and just a work of art in its own right.

The bottle measures 11.6” (29.5cm) long and is about 3.2” (8cm) diameter.

It weighs 780g.
