British WW2 ARP Axe with Black Wooden Handle
Here on offer is an excellent example of a British WW2 ARP axe.
I believe this axe is an early wooden handled version that still retains all of its black paint finish.
The wooden shaft is stamped on both sides with the letters A.R.P.
The solid metal axe head is securely held in place with two large metal copper rivets, and retains its black finish.
The axe blade still retains a good cutting edge.
The ARP or Air Raid Precautions refers to a number of organisations and guidelines in the UK dedicated to the protection of civilians from the danger of air raids during WW2.
Government consideration for air raid precautions increased in the 1920s and 30s, with the Raid Wardens' Service set up in 1937 to report on bombing incidents.
Every local council was responsible for organising ARP wardens, messengers, ambulance drivers, rescue parties, and liaison with police and fire brigades.
The axe measures 13.6” (34.5cm) long and weighs 740g.
Here is a great chance to obtain a real untouched example of this type of ARP axe.
