Boer War Officers Interlocking Campaign Cutlery Set by W. H. WRAGG circa 1890
Here on offer is a Boer War period officers campaign interlocking cutlery set, circa 1890.
My understanding is that W. H. WRAGG of Sheffield, England where well known for making top quality cutlery and offered this style with either rosewood or ebony handles.
These sets where a favourites of British officers of the time and appear in many original campaign kits.
The wooden handles of the knife and fork are each made of two sections of rosewood that are held together with pewter bands.
The handles are stamped with a number, the fork with a 6 and the knife with a 3. This means they are actually a mismatched set, as they should both have the same number.
Clearly the the owner had more than one set and has accidentally crossed them over or as the knife has sloping edges to its corners, it actually makes it easier to pull them apart. Therefore this combination of knife and fork my have been intentional?
The handles have a full-length slot on one side so the two utensils can slot into each other’s handles for safe and compact storage.
The knife and fork themselves are made from polished Sheffield steel and have some slight age related pitting to the metal.
The fork prongs are pointed and the rounded double-edged knife blade is in excellent condition with nicks.
Slotted together they measure 7.25” (18.4cm) long and weigh 74g.
The knife blade and fork both measure 3.25” (8.4cm) long.
A rare set to find today, especially in such excellent condition.
