3rd Pattern FS Fighting Knife by William Rodgers Personalised to Major D. P. EARLAM of the Royal Artillery

Here on offer is an excellent example of a 1970’s period, 3rd Pattern FS Fighting Knife by William Rodgers of Sheffield.

This knife has been personalised to Major D. P. EARLAM of the Royal Artillery and dated to 1972-1973.

This beautiful double-edged dagger blade measures 6.76” (17.4cm) in length and retains its original bright nickel-plated finish.

There are a few tiny areas of greying and what looks like a very light watermark that may polish out.
It also retains its original edge that hasn’t been sharpened.

On one side it has been etched impressed with the owners details:

MAJ. D.P.EARLAM, R.A.

1972-73

I have not been able to find out much information that relates to Major Earlam, but I do think he served in the Royal Artillery until 1996, when he seems to have retired.
He clearly warrants further researching.

The thicker style hilt of the knife is constricted from a cast zinc alloy and is gun metal in colour with the usual 3rd Pattern concentric ring grip.

The pommel cap is made of brass and shows the flattened tang end at the very top.

The oval shaped finger guard is nickel-plated and carries an impressed WILLIAM RODGERS SHEFFIELD ENGLAND mark to the underside.

It is complete with original 3rd Pattern dark brown leather sheath with black painted chape.
This is the type where the chape is fixed by a rivet and the belt flap by two nickel rivets.

The font shows a couple of light scuff marks on the section that covers the blade, but there are no splits or damage to the leather. The top still has its original wide elastic retainer in place which is not overstretched or damaged.

On the reverse, it still retains its two original and unused horizontal leather tabs or ‘wings’.

This knife is in near mint condition and it comes from my private collection of FS Knifes.
The blade measures 6.76” (17.4cm) long and the knife is 11.5” (29.3cm) in total length.

It weighs 265g.
