Unusual British WW2 Bullet Trench Art Letter Opener with Leather Sheath

Here on offer is a great genuine piece of WW2 Trench Art, being a bullet handled letter opener with its original leather sheath.

The letter opener features a long and slightly curved, sharp edged, steel blade that fits securely to an .303 type bullet head and inert cartridge.

The British cartridge and it has the following markings on the bottom:

G B
1940
VII

From research the G B refers to the maker Greenwood and Batley of Leeds, England.

This company manufactured ammunition from an early stage, making in excess of 705 million .303 MK7 cartridges during WW1. They finally ceased production in the late 1950’s. They also had a filling factory at Abbey Wood and later during WW2, one at Farnham.

1940 is the year of manufacture and VII denotes it is a MK7 type cartridge.

The hand made leather sheath has a nice aged finish to the grained leather and has the original metal staples along its seam.

The letter opener measures 6.6” (16.8cm) long with a 3.6” (9.2cm) blade and weighs 35g.
