Very Large WW1 Trench Art - Brass Table Lighter & Ashtray

Here on offer is an unusual version of a very large WW1 brass table lighter and ashtray, probably used in an officer’s mess.

This great piece of “WW1 Trench Art” has been constructed from various lengths of turned brass central supports that screw together. Fitted in the centre is an edged circular dish that acts as a cigarette or cigar rest and ashtray.

Fitted to the top, is the petrol lighter that has a main body made from a large hexagonal brass nut fitted with two copper George V pennies applied, one to each side. Both the pennies show the worn profile of King George V and can’t be accurately dated, as the minted date would be on the other side of the coins.

At the top is a knurled brass screw cap that protects the wick when not in use and next to the wick is the flint wheel set in a brass frame. The flint wheel will not turn freely as there is no flint remaining and it seems to be resting on the spring.

The lighter itself has been tightly fitted to the top of the support and I can’t easily unscrew it, so I have left it in place as I am not going to be using it. I will leave it to the next owner as to whether it needs to be removed, or just appreciated as it is.

From previous examples of these types of lighters, I am sure that at the base of the nut there will be a brass screw that holds in the flint and flint spring.

There will also be a larger screw that seals the hole where lighter fuel can be poured in.

The table lighter is in excellent overall condition, with some slight bumps to the edge of the ashtray.

All the brass has a lovely aged patina to its finish, which would polish up to a bright finish if so required.

This unique example of a WW1 table lighter has been expertly made and makes an impressive display piece.

To comply with postage rulings, the lighter will be shipped without a flint or any lighter fuel inside.

It measures 12.5” (31.7cm) high and 3.7” (9.5cm) diameter at the base. The central ashtray/rest is 5.1” (13cm) diameter.

It weighs a heavy 1.5Kg.
