Very Unusual German Senior Forestry Cutlass - Hilt Candlestick

Here on offer is a really unusual and possibly unique, candlestick that has been made from the hilt of a German Senior Forestry Cutlass, also known as a Hirschfanger.

The Cutlass cast brass gilt “D” guard, is the relatively plain version, having lined edges on both sides. There is a deer hoof where it meets the pommel and one at the tip of the quillion where it passes through the crossguard.

Below the crossguard is a beautiful and finely detailed clamshell that depicts a deer stag seated on the ground, with a slatted fence and tree woodland scene in the background. There is a makers symbol on the back, which is hard to make out, but could be a crowned king, possibly an early WKC makers mark?

The off-white simulated ivory grip plates are in perfect condition, no cracks or chips. They are fitted with two of the original six gilt acorns, which are the type without oak leaves.

The original blade looks to have been replaced with a short section of what looks like a double-edged sword blade. The tip of the blade tang passes through the top of the grip and forms a spike, which can support the base of a candle.
To catch any dripping candle wax, a slightly domed 1.75” (4.5cm) gold painted ornate metal cap has been fitted to the spike. It depicts eight overlaid oak leaves.

The other end of the blade has been fashioned to fit securely into a large gold painted metal dome that forms the base of candlestick. The bottom is covered in green baize to protect the surface what ever it is placed on.

All the cast brass hilt fittings show a light surface age patina to the finish.

Obviously this makes a really interesting display piece for any German edged weapon collector.
However, if you needed spare parts for an existing Cutlass, such as the beautiful clamshell, grip plates or “D” guard and even the two detailed acorns, which are impossible to find these days, then this is an excellent source.

I could probably sell the individual parts for more than the assembled candlestick, but I would sooner leave it as I found it, as I have never seen one in this this style before in all my years of collecting!

The candlestick measures 7.5” (19cm) high and the base is 4.5” (11.4cm) diameter.

It weighs 645g.
