Large WW1 French 105mm Trench Art Embossed Brass Shell Case
Here on offer is a large example of a WW1 French 105mm Trench Art embossed brass shell case.
The case has been beautifully hand embossed with the image of a flowering poppy shown against a stippled background.
The smooth top lip of the case shows some age dents that could be pushed out if so required.
The base shows the stamped French ordinance marks that read as:
105L Mle 1913
MAI 37 L 17 S
I belief this can be interpreted as 105L Mle 1913 means it is a French 105mm Mle 1913, 105x390R shrapnel shell case.
These where normally fired from a Canon de 105 mle 1913 Schneider which was a French artillery piece used in WW1 and then in WW2 by many European countries.
It was made by MAI, Manufacture d'Armes Issy-les-Moulineaux, Lot number 37 L and dated to 1917.
This is really an impressive piece of WW1 Trench Art that is large enough to act as a walking stick or umbrella stand.
The case measures 15.4” (39cm) tall by 4.75” (12.1cm) diameter at the base.
It weighs a heavy 3Kg.
