Here on offer is a beautifully made antique Solid Brass Vesta/Match Holder that has was made from part of the Rochdale “Mitchell Hey” Beam Engine in around 1909.

The whole thing has been made from the brass from the beam engine after it was stopped and scrapped in 1909.

The front of the cup has been professionally engraved with the details of the engine and when it started and stopped, by the then chairman of the company.

The details read as follows:

MITCHELL HEY BEAM ENGINES
No 2 MILL
WHICH WERE STARTED
AUGUST 1865 & WERE STOPPED BY
JAMES KERSHAW ESQ. CHAIRMAN
ON APRIL 2nd 1909.


The cup shaped match holder is securely fixed to a square base by a large screw.

The base has a knurled face on each side that act as the striker plates for the matches.

It is finished with small brass circular feet, fitted to each corner.

It measures 3.2” (8cm) high including the feet and the base is 3” (7.7cm) square.

It weighs a heavy 548g.

This is a wonderful original piece from the Victorian industrial revolution period when beam engines where the work horses of British industry.

It makes an excellent desk display.
