Antique Scottish Silver Mounted Horn Spoon with an Ornate Silver Whistle Tip circa 1890
Here on offer is a fine example of what I believe is an antique Scottish silver mounted horn spoon with an ornate silver whistle set on the top of the handle, circa 1890.
I acquired it in a jewellery box that contained a whole range of antique Scottish brooches and pins.
The long spoon has been made from a beautiful dark piece of horn that shows stunning colouring to its polished finish. There is no damage to the finish or bowl edges. It may look like there is a tiny crack to the tip of the bowl but this is just the natural makeup of the horn itself.
Set into the shaft is a blank shield shaped silver escutcheon with a detailed edge and fitted to the tip is an ornately engraved silver whistle that still works.
I cant see any hallmarks on the silver fittings but it does test positive for 925 grade sterling silver and I believe it is an example of some Scottish provincial silver that wasn’t hallmarked back in the 19th century.
The beautifully engraved whistle really lifts this piece apart from the plain examples that I have seen in the past.
The spoon is in just excellent condition with just one slight “tooth” dent to the underside of the whistle.
It measures 9.2” (23.4cm) long and the bowl is 1.7” (4.3cm) wide.
It weighs 23g.
