Framed Victorian Period Heart-Shaped Sweetheart Pincushion with the emblem for The Dorsetshire Regiment
Here on offer is a stunning example of a Victorian period heart-shaped sweetheart pincushion with the emblem for Dorsetshire Regiment (formed in 1881) that has been cased in a glass fronted wooden period display case.
In the centre of the cushion is a silk colour printed image of the Devonshire Regiment emblem.
Also along both sides in small red glass pinned beads are the words:
FOND
LOVE
This beautiful “Heart” shaped pincushion was probably made by injured and recovering soldiers from wars during Queen Victoria’s reign.
They where mostly sent home to a sweetheart or family member.
This example is in just superb condition and I have left the sealed display case unopened to avoid damaging the decorative display that has been set around the edges of the heart.
The pincushion looks to be made from coloured silks fabrics that have been embellished with lots of clear and colourful pinned on beads and gilt and coloured threads. The edge is trimmed with lace.
I can’t actually tell how old the display case is as it has been taped up on the back and painted with black paint at some point in its life.
This is just a beautiful example of one of these pincushions, in museum condition that will make a great addition to any military collection.
The cushion measures approximately 5” (12.7cm) square and the case is 10” (25.4cm) by 9” (23cm) and 3.25” (8.2cm) deep.
It weighs a heavy 730g.
