Antique Clip Point Bowie Knife with Stag Horn Grips by H.G. LONG & Co - CROSS DAGGERS – SHEFFIELD c1860

Here on offer is an early example of an antique stag horn clip point Bowie Knife by the famous English knife and cutlery maker, H.G Long & Co, circa 1860.

They are also famous for making a range of WW2 SOE knives.

I believe this knife is a very early example of an H.G. Long knife as it only has the CROSS DAGGERS logo and the words CROSS DAGGRS SHEFFIELD on the blade.

From my limited research it appears this was only used for a short period at the start of their penknife and hunting knife production, back in 1841.
Therefore this knife could be even earlier than my estimate of 1860.

The markings then changed to include their name sometimes with or without the Cross Dagger logo.

The handle is made up from two beautiful light coloured slabs of genuine stag horn, that are held in place on a central flat blade tang by three handmade steel pins.

Over the years the stag horn has developed a very smooth finish and nice sheen to its finish.

There are hairline cracks in the horn on both sides where the central steel pin is situated, but both slabs are still held very securely in place.

The oval crossguard is made from solid brass and is in excellent order and retains its tight fit to the handle and blade ricasso.

The Clip Point blade is made from a high quality Steel and has the maker’s logo (crossed daggers in a shield) and words; CROSS DAGGERS, SHEFFIELD stamped on one side of the ricasso.

The blade itself has a slightly rounded tip and now has an overall greying to the finish and overall light scratch marks to the metal.

There is no scabbard or sheath with this example.

The blade measures 5.6” (14.2cm) long and the knife is 9.4” (24cm) in total length.

It weighs 135g.

The knife is in great condition for its age and a rare example of an early H.G. Long & Co knife.
