Here on offer is unusual Mauchline Ware ‘Turret Topped’ circular thread holder for Clark & Co Anchor Sewing Cottons of Paisley. There is an impressive paper-advertising label for Clark & Co attached to the inside of the lid.

The holder itself has a black lacquer finish and the top wooden lid has a turret finish to the edge and a large printed image of General Gordon in civilian dress with the words:


GENERAL GORDON BORN JAN 28th 1833 KILLED JAN 26th 1885


Printed on the top edge and the following words printed on the lower edge:


GORDONS LAST WORDS TO HIS SISTER IN HIS LAST LETTER

I AM QUITE HAPPY, THANK GOD, & LIKE LAWRENCE, I HAVE TRIED TO DO MY DUTY


Around the outer edge of the main body is the printed image of British troops firing on the enemy with officers in the foreground on camels, with the place name in Sudan, METAMMEH, printed at the bottom.

There is some damage to the image of General Gordon on the top of the lid and three of the turrets have chunks missing from them.

The main barrel shaped body and printed image of the battle scene are in excellent condition.

There is a hole in the side of the barrel where the tread would have been feed through.

The interior and base have a royal blue leatherette paper finish to them, typical of the late Victorian period.
It measures 2.8” (7.1cm) high by 3.2” (8.1cm) diameter at the base.

It weighs 76g.
