WW1 Period British Colour Sergeant’s Leather Cartridge Ammunition Case named to C/Sgt. L. E. Letcher
Here on offer is a genuine example of a large WW1 period leather cartridge ammunition case, named to Colour Sergeant L. E. Letcher.
The hard thick dark brown leather case is in original condition with a small tear/repair patch on the inside of the lid on the back left corner.
There is also some scratch marks to the front by the chrome metal lock.
The chrome lock still works but the key is missing.
The front of the lock is stamped with BRITISH MAKE and SECURE LEVER.
Inside there is a top supporting bar across the centre.
There is a wide thick leather buckle strap that wraps around the outside of the case and acts as a handle when it is fastened. The strap has a faint scrolling pattern to it and it looks like the owner has deeply stamped in the Army “Crows Foot” mark in a couple of places on the top.
The military owners name “C/SGT. L. E. LETCHER” has been hand engraved into the top and bottom surface of the case.
Clearly the case warrants researching, C/SGT. L. E. LETCHER, but my initial searching hasn’t turned up any details of his military history as yet.
The case is in excellent ‘used’ condition and now has a beautiful dark aged patina to the leather.
It can still be used today and would make a great shotgun cartridge holder.
It measures 11” (28cm) wide, 7” (17.7cm) high and 6” (15.4cm) thick.
It weighs a heavy 1.26Kg.
