Antique Buffalo Horn Scout Utility Knife by Johnson Western Works Sheffield

Here on offer is a great example of an antique Scout multi function utility Knife made by Johnson Western Works of Sheffield.

The Utility Knife has four functions, which are a main blade, can opener, spike and cork screw. They still retain an excellent ‘snap’ as each tool is closed.

All the main components are made of steel, which show some light overall age darkening and pitting.

The main steel blade has “SCOUT KNIFE” faintly etched on one surface and the makers name and logo stamped on the ricasso. The blade edge has been sharped during its life

JOHNSON WESTERN WORKS SHEFFIELD

The stamped logo is a flag with the initials "C J", which stands for Christopher Johnson.
As it does not include “& CO”, I believe this knife to be pre-partners, so dates it to the 1880s-90s.

It appears that Johnson is well known for Straight Razors and Silver Plated Flatware but pocketknives were produced at the start of his business.

The steel can opener is in excellent condition and also has the makers name and logo stamped on the ricasso.

The steel spike is in full working condition, as is the corkscrew.

The knife side slabs are made from real buffalo horn and are in excellent original condition.

It still retains its large steel belt clip/lanyard loop, for attaching to a scout belt.

The knife with all the functions closed measures 4.75” (11.3cm) including the loop and weighs 158g.

The blade measures 3.1” (7.5cm), the spike 2.8” (7.2cm), the corkscrew 2.6” (6.5cm) and the can opener 2.7” (6.8cm).

It would appear this knife is a rare example and would make a great addition to any Scout collection.
