Rare WW1 Period Sweetheart Pin Cushion Embroidered with the Badge for the Royal Berkshire Regiment ‘China’

Here on offer is a WW1 period or possibly earlier, Royal Berkshire Regiment, Sweetheart Pin Cushion.

On the front it is beautifully hand embroidered with the badge of the Royal Berkshire Regiment ‘China’.

The edges of the square cushion are finished with a silk or satin fringe.

It is in excellent condition with the embroidery retaining most of its original colours and the silk cloth it is stitched onto has just a small area of wear, just below the badge.

All the original stuffing is in place and there are no rips or repairs that I can see.

Overall the cream colour it has a slightly grubby which is commensurate with its age.

Some history relating to the regiment:

The Royal Berkshire Regiment (Princess Charlotte of Wales's) was originally formed in 1881, amalgamating the 49th (Princess Charlotte of Wales's) (Hertfordshire) Regiment of Foot with the 66th (Berkshire) Regiment of Foot and originally formed as The Princess Charlotte of Wales's (Berkshire Regiment).

The 49th Foot becoming the 1st Battalion and the 66th Foot became the 2nd Battalion. In 1885 the ‘Royal’ title was bestowed upon them, (see ‘Royal’ appointment) and became The Princess Charlotte of Wales's (Royal Berkshire Regiment). 1921 saw the titles switched again to become The Royal Berkshire Regiment (Princess Charlotte of Wales's).

The China Dragon dates bake to the Chinese opium war of 1840 to 1843 resulting in the regiment being permitted to adopt the China dragon, and to display the word ‘China’ on their colours etc.

After their services during WWI and II the regiment was amalgamated once more into The Duke of Edinburgh's Royal Regiment (Berkshire and Wiltshire) in 1959.

This is a beautiful and rare Royal Berkshire Regiment display item and probably a unique piece.

The cushion measures 5” (17.8cm) square (including the fringe) and weighs 31g.
