ANTIQUE GEORGIAN ENGLISH HALLMARKED SILVER SNUFFBOX BY JOHN SHAW c1819
Here on offer is a beautiful antique Georgian English hallmarked silver Snuffbox by John Shaw circa 1819.
This pocket Snuffbox is a finely made quality piece and has a crosshatched pattern over the centrally raised lid and a slightly different cross hatch pattern on the central section of the base.
There is a small rectangular cartouche in the centre of the lid, which appears to have the initials CB in a gothic font.
The sides have a dot and central wave pattern applied by hand.
The inside still retains all of its original generously applied gilt finish and the lid hinge is in fine working order.
On the inside base of the Snuffbox are stamped the English silver hallmarks, being the Anchor for Birmingham, the maker’s mark IS and the date letter “V” for the year 1819.
Inside the lid are three further marks, being the profile image of King George III, the maker’s mark IS and the Lion Passant for English silver.
The maker’s mark IS, relates to the fine English silversmith, John Shaw (1803 to 1825), whose snuffboxes command a high premium.
This handsome example is in excellent condition, no splits or cracks, no solder repairs, just a couple of slight bruises to the base that are hard to see. The hinged cover is tight and shuts firmly, when pushed down firmly.
Would make a great addition to any Snuffbox collection.
The Snuffbox measures 1.9” (4.8cm) wide by 1.2” (3cm) deep and 0.6” (1.6cm) high.
It weighs 25.1g.
