RARE ANTIQUE 18thC SPIKED LEATHER DOG COLLAR – USED AS PROTECTION FROM WOLVES
Here on offer is a rare 18th or early 19th century, original leather dog collar that would have been worn as a protection from wolf attacks.
This superb example has been made with two layers of stitched thick leather inset with two rows of metal spikes.
The spiked section is attached by two ‘swivel’ buckles to a thick leather adjustable strap, which has as a strong buckle fastener.
The strap also still has a large sliding brass ring in place to which a lead can be attached.
The collar is in excellent condition for its age, the leather is a little stiff, but all the stitching is good and secure.
The spikes do have some age related surface rust.
The spiked section of the collar measures 9” (23cm) long and the strap is currently fastened at 10” (25.4cm) but it can be adjusted smaller if required.
It weighs a heavy 185g.
