RARE WW2 GERMAN PRISONER OF WAR MINIATURES OF HARBOUR SCENES INSIDE GLASS LIGHT BULBS

Here on offer is a very rare example of TWO large clear glass light bulbs that have had painted models of harbour and costal scenes skillfully set inside them, similar to “ship in a bottle” type work.

They have been set onto a lovely dark mahogany plinth where the two upright sections have a small angled slot cut in them to hold a piece of glass (now missing) and act as a photo frame.

They where made by a German Prisoner Of War (POW) during WW2 in England. My understanding is that German prisoners would make items from what ever they could get their hands on and where requested, apply names to order as such, to sell or trade with the prison guards, who would give them to their loved ones.

One bulb has a scene set in a lush green setting with red and yellow coloured roofed houses set in the hillside. There is a lovely spired church and a tall lighthouse and in the front is a single masted sailing boat with the name “BOBBY” on it.

The other bulb has a similar scene but this is set in a rocky dark landscape with houses, a church, lighthouse and a ship with the name “JOYCE”.
So this amazing “photo frame” was made for a Bobby and Joyce, but sadly I don’t know who they where.

The older lady I bought them from said her mother had been given them buy her father who was in the Royal Navy during WW2.

The detail in these scenes is exceptional and must have been made by a highly skilled modeler or miniaturist.

I can only find very limited references to this type of art. There is one bulb on its own in the Imperial War Museum and the Antiques Roadshow featured a single ‘Bulb” on one of their shows and valued just ONE at between £300 and £350.

So this is a really rare opportunity to acquire a truly rare piece of WW2 POW art that is of museum quality and just a work of art in its own right.

The wooden plinth is 14.2” (36cm) wide by 3.75” (9cm) deep.

Each bulb measures 4.75” (12.2cm) long and is about 3” (7.7cm) diameter.

The whole photo frame weighs 775g.
