WW1 British Great War Veterans of America Bronze Wall Plaque 1914 to 1918
Here on offer is an unusual WW1 related circular cast bronze wall plaque for the British War Veterans of America.
The centre has two raised shields; one depicts the American Flag and the other the British Flag.
Around the shields inside a raised circle are the words,
BRITISH GREAT WAR VETERNS OF AMERICA
Then between the inner and outer raised circle are the words:
BRITISH WAR VETERAN 1914-1918
There are two holes one the outer circle to allow the metal plaque to be fixed to a wall.
There is a slight sheen to the finish of the metal casting, which looks to be some kind of protective finish?
Some history that may be of interest:
The British War Veterans of America was formed in 1919 by a group of men who had returned, or who had emigrated, to New York after having served with the armed forces, with the idea of providing opportunity to continue and foster friendships made under wartime conditions.
It appears that at first their contacts were purely social, but gradually, it became apparent that the less fortunate looked to the more fortunate for a helping hand in a new country. This had been, and still is, extended, as far as funds allow, in a way of assisting with hospitalization, finding of positions, the claiming of pensions and general rehabilitations.
While the services they provide are not restricted to those who become members of the Organization, there is one privilege reserved to members, the right to purchase a grave and to be buried in the British War Veterans plot at Ferncliff Cemetery, Hartsdale, New York and to have their Colour Guard participate in the final ceremonies.
A Memorial Service is held annually at Ferncliff Cemetery on the Sunday preceding November 11th to honour those who rest there in peace.
The plaque itself is in mint condition and looks like it has never been used or mounted on a wall.
Someone has informed me that they where made for the original members back in 1919, to display with pride, on their properties. I have no way of confirming if that is the case, I just know this is a really unusual and I believe rare plaque.
The Plaque itself measures 7.9” (19.9cm) diameter and 0.25” (0.6cm) thick.
It weighs a heavy 1015g.
