Boer War POW “Trench Art” Brass Victorian Ladies Shoe Desk Ornament on Oak Base c1903
Here on offer is a Boer War POW made “Trench Art”, lovely brass Victorian Ladies Shoe ornament on a brass and oak wooden base.
This is one of two Boer War POW “Brass Shoe” items that I am selling and they both came in a beautiful wooden POW box from the island of Bermuda, dated 1903. This relates to the South African Boer soldiers that the British interned on Bermuda during the 2nd Boer War. The last prisoners where released as late as 1903.
The Shoe itself has been hand cut-out from a flattened thick artillery shell base.
The beautifully shaped Victorian Show has been ornately engraved and chiselled to give the effects of the pattern finish on a leather shoe.
There is one copper round head rivet near the top, which acts as a stud button on a shoe.
The flat shoe has two brass pins soldered on the back that slot perfectly into a thick and heavy rectangular brass plate, that has been mounted on top of an edged oak wooden base.
I think this was just made as a fine display ornament, possibly a ladies desk piece?
The brass has a lovely mellow tone and the wood has a rich aged patina.
A wonderful piece of POW Trench Art memorabilia, from the 2nd Boer War.
It measures 6.5” (15.8cm) wide at the base, 4.25” (10.8cm) high and weighs a heavy 570g.
