British WW1 SMLE 1907 Pattern Sanderson Bayonet with Scabbard and Later Canvas Frog

Here on offer is an excellent genuine British WW1 SMLE 1907 Pattern Sanderson Bayonet with Scabbard and later Frog.

The Bayonet retains most of its original blue finish to all the hilt fittings. There is just some very light surface rust on the front of the pommel and inside the ring of the crossguard.

The release button in the pommel still works perfectly and it still retains its original dark wood grips which have a couple of slight dents on the front, but I doubt the grip screws have ever been removed since it was made!

The blade is just a beauty, still retaining all of its dark grey finish and the edge is just perfect, no nicks or sharpening.

One side of the ricasso stamped with a Crown over "G.R. 1907 (Pattern Date) 3 17" (March 1917 Acceptance Date) and the makers name "Sanderson" (Sanderson Bros. & Newbold. The ‘3’ for the month is hard to make out.

The other side carries the War Department 'Broad Arrow' an ‘X’ which is the bend mark and FOUR separate Enfield inspection marks. There is also the number ‘23’ which I believe relates to 1923 when this bayonet was reissued.

The scabbard is in excellent condition, the leather is firm and has no cracks or splits and all the stitching is secure. The chape/throat and frog stud all remain secure. The metalwork shows some signs of light rust.
On the reverse near the top are stamped what I think is an inspection mark, being a Crown over some letters I can’t read and the numbers 77.
There are also some letters: H.G.R and another Reign Mark Crown I think, but it’s hard to make out?

It is also fitted with a canvas frog, but I am sure this is a later addition, from the WW2 period?

This is just one of the nicest examples I have seen for a long time.

The blade measures 17” (43.2cm) long and the bayonet is 21.75” (55.3cm) in total length.

Inserted in the scabbard it measures 22.75” (57.8cm) long.

It weighs a heavy 730g.
