Antique Bone & Silver Cased Tibetan or Chinese Eating Utensil Kit –Trousse c1820

Here on offer is a rare and beautiful example of an antique Tibetan or North Chinese set of encased eating utensils, consisting of a cow bone handled knife or carving utensil, two cow bone chopsticks, all in a silver over bamboo carrying case.

Another name for a set of these eating utensils is called a "TROUSSE" or Kit.

I understand that similar sets were used in Tibet and were also popular with the equestrian cultures of North China and Mongolia.

The designs in the silver casing appear to be of Tibetan origin but I have no expertise in this area and have drawn this conclusion only from comparing this set to other sets available on line.

There is an outer sheathing on the case and a cap on the knife, that appear to be "Tibetan silver" a lower grade silver than we find in England.

There is a ring attached to the case to attach to the owners belt when he is traveling or mounted on horseback. The handle of the knife is made of cow bone held onto the shaft of the blade with copper pins.

This trousse is in great antique used condition, please see all my pictures.

The kit measures 12.5” (31.8cm) long and 0.9” (2.1cm) wide.

It weighs 170g.

This is a wonderful survivor from another century....circa 1820.
