Unusual African Carved Wooden Swagger Stick with Concealed Blade
Here on offer is a unusual African carved wooden swagger stick with a concealed blade.
I was told this piece was used as a swagger stick by a British officer, in Kenya during WW2, but no provenance exists to support this?
However, the “stick” is the correct length and size to be used as a swagger stick.
The grip has been carved from African blackwood and has geometric chequered and striped patterning possibly to simulate reptile skin?
The smooth sheath appears to be made from a dark African mahogany wood and has a steel collar fitted at both ends, that now show some slight age darkening to the finish.
The long and impressive 13.5” (34.3cm) single edged plain steel blade, is very sharp and in excellent condition, with just some light age staining to the finish.
It is devoid of any maker’s marks as is normal with African made edged weapons.
The blade when pushed all the way in, fits snugly into the sheath and stays in place.
The whole swagger stick is in excellent condition and now has a beautiful dark patina to the wood.
With the blade inserted, it measures 20.1” (51cm) long and is about 1” (2.4cm) diameter.
It weighs 330g.
