Unusual Letter Opener in the form of a WW1 British Vickers Machine Gun Barrel
Here on offer is an unusual letter opener in the form of a WW1 British Vickers machine gun. Barrel.
I am not sure when this letter opener was actually made? It could be a period made piece, it is hard to tell, but that aside, it is an impressive piece.
All the external fittings are made from brass and are fitted to a checkered wooden grip and ribbed sheath, that looks like the barrel of a water-cooled WW1 Vickers machine gun.
Set into the barrel is a small brass plaque, that has been stamped with:
M.G.C. 1917
Then on the top of the wooden grip is a detailed cutout image of a WW1 Vickers machine gun on its stand.
George V copper pennies have been cut and shaped to cap both ends of the wooden barrel sheath and the wooden grip.
The 4.5” steel blade has a double cutting edge and tapers to a thin point.
There is no makers mark or name that I can see, but it has been very well made.
The Vickers machine gun was a water-cooled .303 British (7.7 mm) machine gun produced by Vickers Limited, originally for the British Army.
Overall, it is in excellent condition, with no rust or dings to the blade just some scratches and an age patina to the fittings.
The blade measures 4.5” (11.4cm) long and the letter opener, in the sheath is 9.75” (24.8cm) long.
It weighs 145g.
