Here on offer is antique framed coloured print of Eastney Barracks at Southsea, Hants in 1876 being the original headquarters of the Royal Marine Artillery.
The coloured image depicts the barracks as viewed from the sea, with various boats sailing in the foreground and people taking in the view, some appear to be in uniforms of the period. Around the bottom edge it has the printer’s details which are hard to make out, but seem to read as:
Rolic & Co London P 6205
Along with on what appears to be a date:
20 Oct 1876
Eastney Barracks, designed by William Scamp was built as headquarters for the Royal Marine Artillery, who moved in from Fort Cumberland in 1867.
After the amalgamation of the Royal Marine Artillery and Royal Marine Artillery in 1923, Forton Barracks was closed and Eastney Barracks served as headquarters for the Portsmouth Division of the Corps.
The series of seven linked blocks facing the sea forms the second longest barracks frontage in the country. The ensemble has been called "the best and most complete barracks of the post-Crimean War period".
Eastney Barracks remained the Corps Headquarters until 1995, when it was sold and converted to private housing.
The print appears to be in excellent condition and is protected in a glazed and wooden.
The frame measures 8.75” (22.2cm) by 7.1” (18cm) and weighs 370g.
