Unusual WW1 Trench Art Mills Grenade Adapted to be used as a Candlestick
Here on offer is a really unusual and very well made. example of what appears to be a piece of WW1 period trench art, a Mills No.5 grenade, that has been adapted to be used as a candlestick, being mounted on to a smooth brass dished base.
When I acquired this piece inside the grenade was half full with used red candle wax, which I have since cleaned out.
The inert grenade body is unusual in that it is in its “pre” machined/drilled form, with no thread in the base or the filler hole, which has also not even been drilled out.
Someone has managed to obtain a Mills grenade body casting from the production line, before it was worked on. They removed the raised lever supports at the top and smoothed the finish to blend it in with the body.
The outer grenade body now has a lovely dark patina finish to the metal, no rust and shows remnants of black paint at the top.
The are no maker’s marks that I can see on the outside.
The top has been drilled and threaded and it now screws to a beautiful polished dished base.
This very unusual piece makes a great desk ornament in its own right or can still be used as a candlestick.
PLEASE NOTE: This item is free from explosives (FFE and contains no explosive elements or parts thereof).
It measures 3.6” (9.2cm) high and the base plate is 4.25” (10.8cm) diameter.
It weighs a heavy 1Kg.
