Antique I*XL GEORGE WOSTENHOLM Stag Handled Bowie Knife with Original Leather Sheath c 1890

Here on offer is a great example of an antique I*XL GEORGE WOSTENHOLM stag handled bowie knife with original leather sheath, circa 1890.

The knife has been used and shows signs of heavy sharping to the blade, but it still retains a sharp edge. There is some aged “greying” and scratch marks to the blade finish, but I think this would clean up to a brighter finish, if that was preferred?

On one side of the ricasso is stamped in large letters:

I*XL

The knife has two near perfect slices of pale-coloured stag horn that have been shaped to form the tight fit of the grip to the blade tang and brass finger guard. It is unusual to find the grip slabs in such perfect condition, no cracks of splits. All three brass retaining pins are also still in place.

It comes with its original but now worn leather sheath that still has its retaining strap and press stud at the top. All the stitching seems to be in place but one of the rivets is now missing. This type of bowie sheath has a reinforced section on the front, which has a slight tare by the top rivet.

It does now have scuff marks and scratches to the leather finish and looks to have the initials “DB” marked into the leather.

The blade measures 5.7” (14.3cm) long and the knife itself is a total of 10” (25.4cm) long.

It weighs 255g.
