Commemorative Lead Medallion to John P Holland – H.M. Submarine No.1 (Holland 1)

Here on offer is a commemorative medallion that has been made from the recovered lead batteries from H.M. Submarine No.1 (HMS HOLLAND 1).

It actually celebrates John Philip Holland (1841 – 1914) the Irish engineer who developed the first submarine to be formally commissioned by the US Navy and the first Royal Navy Submarine H.M. Holland I. The submarine was Launched in 1901, sunk in 1913 and was recovered in 1982 and is now on display at the Royal Navy Submarine Museum, Gosport, England.

This example of the medallion has been encased in a clear resin material that has a slightly golden tinge to it. This has actually help preserve the lead in perfect condition, avoiding any tarnishing of the metal.

The obverse shows an image of the submarine in the centre and the words:

LEAD FROM BATTERIES H.M.SUBMARINE I (HOLLAND I)

On the reverse it has a image of John Holland on a submarine turret with the words:

TO COMMEMORATE JOHN PHILLIP HOLLAND 1841- 1914

The medallion measures 1.2” (3.5cm) diameter and weighs 36g.
