Rare WWI Brass Matchbox Cover with Kewpies or Pixies "FUMSUP" Dolls c1914

Here on offer is an original and very rare WW1 period brass matchbox cover with kewpies or pixies "FUMSUP" dolls, circa 1914.

The matchbox cover is made from solid brass and is larger than the standard matchboxes of the time. It has three cover sides with an open side with lipped retainers to allow the striker side of a matchbox to be used.

Fixed on the top cover is a pair of detailed kewpie or pixie “FUMSUP” dolls with the words FOR LUCK! in raised letters below them.

There is some slight rubbing wear to the bodies of the dolls where they would have been touch for good luck before going into battle.

The faces still show the detail including the dolls hair.

FUMSUP was a popular name for good luck charms dating to the 19th and 20th century and it's believed to be a derivative of the saying "thumbs up" and was often given to WW1 soldiers as a “Good Luck” token that could be carried with them into battle.

This is the first time in all the years of my collecting that I have seen this type of Good Luck matchbox cover. It will make a great addition to any WW1 military collection.

It measures 3.2” (8.1cm) long by 1.9” (4.9cm) wide and 0.6” (1.6cm) deep.

It weighs 52g.
