Vintage Soviet Space Souvenir Desk Globe - First Man in Space - Yuri Gagarin - 12th April 1961

Here on offer is a vintage soviet space souvenir made to celebrate the Russian, Yuri Gagarin being the first man in space on 12th April 1961.

It consists of a bright chrome plated metal globe with the outlines of the world’s continents and CCCP stamped on the Russian territory.

A steel wire then comes out of a “star” stamped on Russia where the launch site was and loops around the top of the globe with a Vostok rocket on the tip.

The globe is mounted on a circular cream coloured plastic base that has the date:

12 APRIL 1961 in Russian in raised letters on it.

On April 12, 1961, aboard the spacecraft Vostok 1, Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Alekseyevich Gagarin becomes the first human being to travel into space. During the flight, the 27-year-old test pilot and industrial technician also became the first man to orbit the planet, a feat accomplished by his space capsule in 89 minutes. Vostok 1 orbited Earth at a maximum altitude of 187 miles and was guided entirely by an automatic control system. The only statement attributed to Gagarin during his one hour and 48 minutes in space was, “Flight is proceeding normally; I am well.”

The globe is in excellent condition with no damage and just the slightest light rust marks to the metal loop.

It measures 2.75” (7cm) high by 2.3” (5.8cm) diameter at the base.

It weighs 48g.
