Unusual WW2 City of London Mayoral Hallmarked Silver Tray dated 9th Nov 1940

Here on offer is an unusual City of London Coat of Arms Mayoral silver tray.

The inscription of the front dates it to 9th November 1940, relates it to period of The Blitz on London during WW2.

The scalloped edged octagonal silver tray has four ornate scrolled feet and is in excellent condition with just a couple of very shallow dings that are hard to see.

It been professionally engraved on the front, with the coat of arms for London, and the both the mayors and sheriffs names.

Sir George Henry Wilkinson, 1st Baronet, KCVO (20 July 1885 – 27 June 1967) was Lord Mayor of London for 1940 to 1941.

Alexander Trentham was his Sheriff at the time, but sadly was killed in an air raid one month later in December 1940.

On the back of the tray there is a clear set of English silver hallmarks, the Lion Passant for English silver (925), a crown for the assay office of Sheffield and the date letter “W” for the year 1939.

It also shows the maker’s mark, “HA” set in an chamfered rectangle, which I believe stands for the maker:

Atkin Brothers of Sheffield.

Truro Works, Matilda Street, Sheffield

Atkin Brothers was in business from 1853 until 1958 when they were taken over by C J Vander Ltd.

There is also a Registered Design Rd No. 443094 that dates to 1904 when the design was first registered.

The tray is 8.25” (21cm) wide and stands about 0.75” (2cm) high.

It weighs a heavy 350g and is worth about £198 in silver scrap value alone as of 11/05/23.
