Cased English Hallmarked Solid Silver British Military Inter Company Shooting Challenge Shield Medal dated 1911 India

Here on offer is a cased English hallmarked solid silver medal awarded to the winner of the British Military Inter Company Shooting Challenge Shield in 1911.

The shield shaped medal has been made from solid silver and the front depicts the image of a shooting target set in white enamel, in front of two crossed rifles. At the top is a finely detailed crown set with red enamel and at the very top is a loop ring that is stamped with the Lion Passant.
At the bottom is a shield shaped cartouche that is engraved with the competition details:

INTER. COMPANY
CHALLENGE
SHIELD
1911

The back shows some fine engraving work on the crown and is engraved with the winners details:

WON BY
F COY. 1st C.V.R.
SERGT. P.W. THORNBERRY

There is also a clear set of English silver hallmarks, the Lion Passant for English silver (925), an anchor for the assay office of Birmingham and the date letter “i” for the year 1908.

It also shows the makers mark, “W.J.D.” set in an indented rectangle, which I believe stands for the maker:

William James Dingley

of Warstone Lane, Birmingham.

There is also a Registered Design Rd No. 433165 that dates to 1905 when the design was first registered.

The medal still retains its original hard-shelled green leather covered case.

Inside it has a green velvet base and there is a metal hanging loop for the medal.

Printed on the silk lining inside the top lid is the distributer’s name:

J. BOSECK
JEWELLER
CALCUTTA

Therefore this medal was made in England and sold via a jeweller in India back in the early 1900’s when the British Army where based in India.

I believe F COY. Refers to ‘F Company’
But I can’t find out what the abbreviations 1st C.V.R. relate to and I can’t trace Sergeant P.W. Thornberry.
If anybody can help, please drop me an email.

It measures 1.6” (4.1cm) to top of ring by 1” (2.4cm) wide and weighs 11g.

The medal is in mint condition with no damage to the enamel.

Please see my pictures for the details of the condition, which complement this description.
