Original WW2 German K98 bayonet & Scabbard personalised with Hitler Youth HJ emblem

Here on offer is an interesting example of an original WW2 German K98 bayonet that has been personalised by the owner insetting a Hitler Youth (HJ) enamelled emblem into the front wooden grip plate.

My understanding is that these where never officially issued in this format.

Therefore it is likely that after leaving the Hitler Youth and joining the German Army (Heer) the owner added the emblem to indicate that he had passed the HJ exams when he was younger.

Also of interest is the fact the rifle slot has been period painted with a yellow paint? I have never seen this before and don’t know what it relates too other than possibly an army unit for parade purposes?

The bayonet has no makers mark just what maybe a serial number stamped into the top of the pommel, which reads as:

18780
The bayonet is in excellent condition with a plain near mint condition double fullered blade.

The steel grip shows just very light surface rust marks and still retains its dark wooden grip plates.

The front plate has a genuine HJ enamelled emblem set into it, which shows some loss of enamel covering the top red section.

These emblems on their own, are now fetching over £80 each!

The sprung release button is in full working order and most of the yellow paint is still in place in the rifle slot.

The black metal scabbard is in excellent condition, no dents and just very minor surface rust. On the front it retains its scabbard throat retaining screw and frog lug.

The scabbard blade measures 11.7” (21.5cm) long and the knife is 16.8” (42.7cm) in total length.

It weighs 595g.
